Book review – What Beauty There Is

About

Set aagainst the cold and harsh backdrop of winter in Idaho, Cory Anderson’s debut is about beauty, brutality and broken people trying to survive.

Jack has nothing left. Nothing except for his younger brother, Matty, who he’d die for.

Now Jack faces a stark choice: loose his brother to Foster care, or find the drug money that sent his father to prison. He chooses the money.

And so begins a race against time as Jack tries to track down the stash of money while evading the clutches of Bardem, the man who masterminded the drug deal gone wrong all those years ago and who has held a Vendetta against Jack’s family ever since.

But when Jack meet Eva, things become even more complicated.

At first Jack since he’s found someone he can lean on for once, but then it turns out the Ava might be the one person guaranteed to bring Bardem to Jack’s door.

Review

This book had me gripped from the beginning, such an amazing debut. This is not my usual genre, but I literally could not put this down and have already recommended to adults and teens alike.

Cory has such a way of describing everything from the physical feeling of each character to the environment that they find themselves in.

The relationship between Jack and his brother Matty is heart wrenching a few tears where shed. And then to see a magical relationship with Ava develop had me hoping and dreaming so hard for them.

You could almost imagine this as a movie, really is that detailed and gripping. Every scene I could picture in my head even down to clothes they are wearing.
